Jubilee Sailing Trust
The JST is a charity which promotes the integration of physically disabled and able-bodied people through tall ship sailing. It has been running for over 30 years, and during that time has enriched, and in many cases changed, the lives of many thousands of people. The two, unique, ships, Lord Nelson and Tenacious, have been designed and built to enable people of all physical abilities to sail side by side on equal terms. They usually spend the summer in British and European waters, before setting off for the winter sun in the Canaries, the Med, or Antigua. You have to be 16 or over to take part on one of these fabulous working holidays, but there is no upper age limit - we have had a 99 year-old sail with us!
To encourage leadership and communication skills, and a greater awareness of diversity issues, we offer people between the ages of 16 and 25 a scheme called the Youth Leadership@Sea for which they have to undertake a number of tasks, such as taking over a watch and giving a presentation with others. Funding of up to £300 is available for participants of this. Also, joining a voyage of 5 days or more counts as the residential element of the D of E Gold Award. More details of these schemes and of JST can be found at www.jst.org.uk. Through our Head Office, local contacts and our own branch, we can often offer help with funding a voyage.
