On the 6th October 200 young people attended Devon scouting's young people World Scout Jamboree selection weekend. There were 63 places up for grabs; the largest number Devon scouting has ever been given.
The young people arrived and were divided up into their camp subcamps: North America, Canada, Korea & Mexico. The sub camp staff welcomed them and put them at ease. The subcamps approach to this ranged from playing loud music and line dancing to obtaining cactuses from around the camp.
Next came the night glow stick hike in the local woods with the last group returning at 0200 very muddy but having had fun.
On Saturday a series of bases that were run each testing a different skill: physical skills, team working, scouting values and problem-solving. Although tired the young people had a great time.
The evening began with a campfire where they took part in sketches and songs they witnessed the Institute of the lucky seven leaders who have been selected to take our young people to the World Scout Jamboree, This is was the final formal duty of the previous jamboree team who went to Japan.
Sunday< they took part in series of team games on the theme of global trade where they had to make commercial and ethical decisions. It was interesting to see some of the decisions made. They also took part in workshops involving them in where Devon Scouting would like to go next. Look out world, Devon is coming!!.
After all this the young people went home tired but having had a great camp, as well as making lots of new friends in scouting. They also found out more about what scouting is about and the only limit is that which they place upon themselves.
The selectors had the unenviable task of selecting 63 from the 200. For those who were not selected it does not mean you were not good enough just there was not enough places, please keep an eye out for an exciting international opportunity in 2019. You will be offered the first opportunity to sign up.
After much deliberation the final 63 that Devon selected are:
Exmouth & Budleigh Salterton
Plympton & Ivybridge
Kai Ashton Bullard
Well done to all ! we look foreword to hearing about the adventure
for those who were not successful, watch out for other exciting adventures,
